Deputies began CPR at the home on Victoria Street in Highland, but the boy was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Investigators concluded that the child “gained access to a gun hidden between two seat cushions on a couch and shot himself,” according to a sheriff’s department news release cited by PEOPLE.
Authorities said the toddler’s 20 year old mother, Jamaria Cobb, and her 52 year old boyfriend, Armand Bright, were inside the home when the shooting happened, FOX11 reported. Both were arrested on suspicion of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death.
Investigators have not disclosed who owned the gun or why it was left unsecured within reach of the child. Another child was also inside the home and was taken into custody by Child and Family Services after the incident, the release stated. Cobb and Bright are being held at Central Detention Center on bail set at $1,350,000.
