Archaeologists have found a fascinating set of frescoes in the ancient city of Pompeii in early 2025, which give us new insights into life before the city was destroyed in 79 AD. These murals are on a large scale, dating back to 40-30 BC, and feature ritual scenes which are linked to the worship of Bacchus, who is the Roman version of Dionysus in Greek mythology. They were discovered in a house that has come to be known as the House of Thiasus, and while there are speculations that the house was originally inhabited by Aulus Rustius Verus, this is not known for sure. The murals were originally in a banquet room in the house, which was most probably used for social events and ritual activities.

The wall paintings portray the female followers of Bacchus, or bacchantes, who take part in ritual acts such as dancing and hunting. Many of the figures appear nearly life-sized, which makes the scenes more interesting. One main image shows an elderly man holding a torch while standing beside a young woman, which represents an initiation ritual into the Dionysian mysteries. It was a secretive religious tradition practiced throughout the Roman world, as believed by scholars (Euronews, 2025). These cults were known for symbolic ceremonies that were focused on transformation and spiritual connection with the god. Participants believed that the rituals gave them personal renewal and deeper understanding of divine power. These frescoes give us a rare insight into how the rituals may have appeared, because the ceremonies were private and rarely described openly in historical texts (Türkiye Today, 2025).


Some similarities between the newly discovered paintings and those inside the famous Villa of the Mysteries, which is another Pompeian site known for its elaborate Bacchic imagery, have been described by researchers. Both sets of paintings show initiation scenes and ritual participants. However, the frescoes from the House of Thiasus appear to provide additional differences in costume and ceremonial symbolism (Euronews, 2025). The discovery was made during systematic excavations in an area that has revealed more than fifty rooms and several residential buildings, known as Regio IX. These ongoing excavations will continue to improve scholars’ understanding of daily life in Pompeii during the late Roman Republic. The location of the frescoes within a private home might tell us that Bacchic rituals were not limited to public temples but could also be practiced within elite domestic spaces (Brussels Times, 2025).

Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli said that the find is an “extraordinary historical document,” and states that the frescoes reveal a new perspective on the religious rituals and artistic traditions of the Romans (Brussels Times, 2025). The Pompeii ruins were buried by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and continue to provide archaeologists with a rare glimpse into life in ancient civilization. The House of Thiasus frescoes open a window into elements of religion, art, and social gatherings that were integrated with lives in ancient Rome, some two millennia ago.
