Doctor-turned author Benjamin Spock was one of the most influential pediatricians in American history, best known for changing how parents understood and cared for their children. Born in 1903, Spock trained as a medical doctor and later became a specialist in child development. At a time when parenting advice was strict and emotionally distant, he encouraged a more caring and flexible approach. He had a simple yet powerful message for parents that they should trust their instincts and show affection to their children.

Spock became famous after publishing The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care in 1946 which quickly became a bestseller. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the book - later reprinted as Baby and Child Care - had been translated into 42 languages and sold more than 50 million copies worldwide by the time of his death at the age of 94.

Spock entered the Medical Corps of the US Naval Reserve as a psychiatrist in 1944, and later rose to the rank of lieutenant commander before being released two years later. During this period, he wrote his bestselling book 'The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care'. The book helped generations of parents feel more confident and less anxious, offering practical advice written in clear, friendly language. Unlike many experts of his time, Spock emphasized the emotional needs of children, not just their physical health.
