The fatal accident occurred on Saturday (June 13, 2026) at Ponte do Esqueleto, or “Skeleton Bridge,” an abandoned structure linking the cities of Limeira and Cordeirópolis in São Paulo state, when the victim was practicing a "rope jump" activity on the Ponte do Esqueleto Trail in Limeira.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, who died after plunging 130 feet from a bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday, June 13. According to local media reports, the fatal fall occurred after staff allegedly failed to attach a safety cord before the jump.
Before the tragic accident that claimed her life, De Freitas shared a series of Instagram Stories that have since taken on a chilling new significance. "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” she wrote just hours before her death, PEOPLE reported, citing Brazilian news portal Globo.
The outlet shared three screenshots from De Freitas’ Instagram Stories. One image showed the considerable height from which the jump began, while another featured two wristbands bearing the Portuguese phrase, "Takeoff authorized." A third photo captured a "Danger" sign along a rural road.
The jump took place at a site known as "Skeleton Bridge," an abandoned structure that has long drawn adventurers and thrill-seekers. Authorities noted that the location has a documented history of serious accidents, including previous fatalities, prompting renewed concerns about the adequacy of safety measures at the site.
Suspects arrested amid probe
Videos capturing the moments leading up to the tragedy later circulated on social media. The footage reportedly shows three people pushing De Freitas from the bridge before realizing that the safety rope had not been attached.
According to local media reports, six individuals were taken to a local police station for questioning, with three remaining in custody. Bystanders at the scene reportedly administered CPR until personnel from the SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) arrived. However, CNN Brazil reported that De Freitas was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple traumatic injuries.
