Amid rising tensions with Iran, including domestic protests and Tehran’s harsh suppression of dissent, the US Navy has repositioned some of its most powerful naval forces to the Middle East as a show of strength and deterrence. The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) which functions under Carrier Strike Group 3 (CSG-3) have been ordered into the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility, raising questions about leadership, readiness and whether Iran or its proxies might target US military leaders first in a potential escalation.

USS Abraham Lincoln: Pivot to the Middle East

The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), one of the US Navy’s ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, is serving as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 3, a potent warfighting formation equipped with fighter jets, electronic warfare aircraft, helicopters and surface escorts.

In January 2026, the Pentagon ordered the carrier strike group to redeploy from the South China Sea to the CENTCOM area in response to escalating tensions with Iran, particularly amid Tehran’s internal unrest and the US administration’s warnings of a potential forceful response.

The transit of the strike group across the Indian Ocean toward the Arabian Sea represented a strategic realignment of US power projection aimed at deterrence, stability and readiness.

Regionally, the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln contributes thousands of personnel and advanced capabilities, including F-35C Lightning II and F/A-18 Super Hornet combat aircraft, as well as missiles such as the Tomahawk cruise missile, a key tool for precision long-range strikes.

This positioning also signals potential future Iranian drone swarms as a credible threat to large naval vessels like the Abraham Lincoln strike group. This passes down the threat of an attack to the leaders running the strike group.

Key US military leaders Iran might targets

1. Rear Admiral Todd E. Whalen: Commander, Carrier Strike Group 3

As the operational commander of the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group, Whalen is responsible for tactical decisions at sea and the deployment of air and sea assets. His leadership directly affects how US maritime force posture is implemented in CENTCOM waters.

2. Capt. Matthew A. McNealy: Chief of Staff, CSG-3

McNealy is central to coordinating planning and execution across the carrier strike group’s staff, bridging strategic planning and operational demands in high-stakes environments.

3. Command Master Chief Oneil Lewis: Senior Enlisted Advisor

While not a flag officer, Lewis provides critical experience and guidance to thousands of sailors, influencing readiness, morale and combat effectiveness across the strike group.

Beyond the broader command structure of Carrier Strike Group 3, the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) itself is led by a dedicated shipboard command team responsible for the carrier’s day-to-day operations, combat readiness, and the safety of more than 5,000 sailors and aviators onboard. These leaders are critical nodes in any high-tension environment, particularly during forward deployments in the Middle East.

4. Captain Daniel J. Keeler: Commanding Officer, USS Abraham Lincoln

As Commanding Officer (CO) of the USS Abraham Lincoln, Captain Daniel J. Keeler holds ultimate responsibility for the carrier’s operational effectiveness, navigation, and warfighting readiness. The CO is accountable for executing tasking from Carrier Strike Group leadership while ensuring the ship can conduct sustained flight operations, power projection, and defense missions. In a potential conflict scenario involving Iran, the carrier’s commanding officer would be central to real-time tactical execution at sea.

5. Captain Kerry P. Hicks: Executive Officer, USS Abraham Lincoln

Serving as Executive Officer (XO), Captain Kerry P. Hicks is the second-in-command and oversees internal ship management, discipline, and coordination between departments. The XO ensures the carrier remains mission-ready across engineering, aviation, medical, and security functions. In high-tempo operations, the XO’s role is vital to maintaining continuity of command and operational resilience.

6. Command Master Chief Ryan Resurreccion: Command Master Chief

Command Master Chief Ryan Resurreccion is the senior enlisted leader aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, acting as the principal advisor to the commanding officer on enlisted morale, training, discipline, and combat readiness. While not a tactical decision-maker, the Command Master Chief’s influence on crew effectiveness directly affects the carrier’s ability to sustain prolonged operations under threat.
