Comedian and television actor Alex Duong, best known for his stand-up work and recurring role on the CBS police drama Blue Bloods, died on March 28, 2026, at the age of 42, after a courageous year-long fight with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. His death, confirmed by close friends, occurred at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, where he was surrounded by loved ones, including his wife Christina Duong and their five-year-old daughter, Everest.

Born on March 20, 1984, in Dallas, Texas, Alex Duong began his entertainment career in the mid-2000s and built a reputation on the Los Angeles stand-up scene, regularly performing at clubs such as the Comedy Store. Over nearly two decades, Duong also established himself as a versatile television character actor.

His television credits span a variety of genres and popular shows. Duong appeared in comedies such as Everybody Hates Chris and 90210, crime dramas like Dexter, and soap operas including The Young and the Restless.

He was especially recognized for his recurring portrayal of criminal and gang leader Sonny Le on Blue Bloods.

Alex Duong diagnosis and health struggles

Duong’s health battle began in early 2025, when he was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive subtype of rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissues. This form can progress rapidly and is notoriously difficult to treat.

His initial symptoms reportedly included eye pain, swelling, and vision changes, and over the course of the illness, he suffered complete loss of vision in his left eye.

Despite undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Duong’s condition worsened as the cancer spread, eventually affecting his spine and brain and causing seizures and debilitating pain. A severe infection led him into septic shock the day before his death, accelerating his health decline.

Throughout Duong’s illness, the entertainment community rallied around him and his family. Fellow comedians organized benefit shows, including events like The Alex Duong Has Cancer in His Eye Comedy Benefit Show at venues in Los Angeles, with contributions from peers and rising stars alike.

Friends also established a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses, memorial services, and long-term support for Duong’s daughter, Everest.
