In his later years, Ahn battled blood cancer, a struggle he kept largely private until recent hospitalizations. Reports indicate he was first diagnosed in 2019, and although briefly declared cancer-free in 2020, the disease returned and continued to impact his health.
He was hospitalized in late December 2025 after collapsing at home and suffering a cardiac arrest, placing him in critical condition before his death in early January.
Ahn died surrounded by family in Seoul, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations of Korean film and television. He married sculptor and university professor Oh So-yeong in 1985, and the couple had two sons.

Born on January 1, 1952, in Daegu, South Korea, to a father who worked as a film planner, Ahn Sung-ki began acting at just six years old. His first screen appearance was in the film Twilight Train in 1957, launching what would become a prolific and respected career spanning over 130 films.Over the decades, he delivered powerful performances across a wide range of genres. He was acclaimed for roles such as the Buddhist monk in Mandara (1981), a beggar in Whale Hunting (1984), and a Vietnam War veteran turned novelist in White Badge (1992). His portrayal of a special forces trainer in Silmido (2003) and a devoted music manager in Radio Star (2006) remain among his most celebrated work, embodying his versatility and deep emotional resonance.
Awards, recognition, and influence
Ahn’s contributions to Korean cinema earned him numerous accolades. He won the Grand Bell Award for Best Actor five times.In recognition of his cultural impact, he received the Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2005 and the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2013, honors awarded by the South Korean government for outstanding contributions to the arts.
