Room temperature matters more than you’d think
In the experiment, the room temperature was gradually increased from 15°C to 31°C inside a controlled chamber with all other factors remaining constant. Energy consumption steadily increased throughout this process. According to the study, one unit consumed an extra 141 watt-hours per degree increase in room temperature while the other consumed an extra 102 watt-hours per degree increase in room temperature. Over the full 16-degree range, that works out to more than 2 extra kilowatt-hours a day for one unit and about 1.6 kilowatt-hours for the other, assuming the room stayed at the full 31°C for a continuous 24-hour period. In a typical home, where temperatures fluctuate rather than staying pinned at that peak, the added daily cost would usually be smaller. This is exactly why placement quietly matters so much. Even if the rest of the kitchen feels normal, a fridge tucked next to a stove, pressed against a sun-facing window, or squeezed into a stuffy utility corner is basically living in its own personal heat wave.
Why a warm corner makes the compressor work overtime
The reason is simple physics. A fridge works by taking heat from the interior and dumping it into the surrounding room. If that room is already warm, like a kitchen near a stove, a sunlit window, or a poorly ventilated corner, the compressor has to work harder and run longer to move the same amount of heat out, the same way an air conditioner struggles more on a scorching afternoon than on a mild one. The appliance is not defective; it is simply working harder in a warmer environment.

Real homes tell a similar story
Lab results are one thing, but do ordinary households see the same pattern? In another peer-reviewed study, ‘Opening the door on refrigerator energy consumption: quantifying the key drivers in the home,’ published in the journal Energy Efficiency, researchers Lloyd Harrington and colleagues at the University of Melbourne examined field data from 235 homes across Australia to understand what really drives a refrigerator’s real-world energy use. The paper shows that room air temperature was, by far, the largest single factor, typically accounting for some 75 percent of total energy consumption. Defrosting made up around 10 percent, and average user behavior like door openings made up around 15 percent on average, but up to 45 percent in bigger households that opened the door more often. That upper range shows behavior can matter a lot in high-traffic kitchens, but even then, ambient temperature remained the single largest and most consistent factor across the full sample. To summarize, the real-world data confirms the laboratory results: location in the home tends to outweigh usage for most households, even if heavy daily use can narrow that gap.
What it really means for your kitchen
A few adjustments can help, without any need to rearrange your entire kitchen. The U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY STAR program recommends a few concrete placement fixes: avoid placing a refrigerator next to an oven, dishwasher, stove, or other heat-emitting appliance, since even a shared wall can transfer enough heat to affect performance. Do not place the appliance in direct sunlight from a window for a large part of the day. Sunlight can warm the outside of the appliance for hours without your knowing it. Give the unit a bit of breathing space behind and around it, because a fridge jammed up against a wall traps the very heat it’s trying to expel, making the compressor work overtime.
If you live in a rented apartment or shared flat and have limited options for where the fridge can go, even small changes can help. Moving it a few inches away from the wall, drawing a curtain on the sunniest side of the kitchen, or sliding it one counter away from the stove can each take a bite out of the extra load your appliance is quietly bearing every single day. It’s rarely about getting a better fridge. Often, it’s just about giving the one you already have a cooler, less crowded corner to work from.
