Phyllis Gilliam worked as a costume supervisor on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, contributing to both Seasons 1 and 2 of the CBS comedy. Her career in television and film spanned more than three decades, with credits on nearly 30 productions listed on IMDb.
Among the projects she worked on were The Upshaws, Miracle Workers, Home Economics, Ghosts, Just Shoot Me!, Role Models, and Agent Carter.
According to her obituary shared by Glendale Funeral Home, Phyllis Gilliam was born in Mobile, Alabama, where she grew up in a family with seven sisters and one brother. She attended St. James Major Catholic School and McGill-Toolen High School before earning a bachelor’s degree at Xavier University of Louisiana. It was there that she discovered her passion for theater and costume design. She later earned a master’s degree in the field from the University of Houston.
“Anyone who worked with Phyllis can attest to what a beautiful spirit she had - always the first to help others with a smile on her face, regardless of the circumstances,” the obituary read.
The obituary also detailed her personal life, including her marriage to Murray Gilliam, a US Marine Corps veteran and personal trainer. The two married on June 14, 1997, and later welcomed two children, Robert and Susan.
In one of the most emotional passages, the obituary recounted the couple’s health struggles after both were diagnosed with cancer.
After Murray died in January 2026, the obituary recalled a deeply personal moment from his funeral. “She held the flag close to her chest and gazed at the sky - ‘I got your flag, honey, I got it.’”
