Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka was nominated for five Grammys between 1959 and 1977.
"Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka," a statement from the family read. "A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed." Sedaka is survived by his wife, Leba Strassberg, whom he married in 1962, as well as their two children, Dara and Marc.
Sedaka was a legendary American singer, songwriter, and pianist whose career shaped generations of pop music. Rising to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he delivered timeless hits such as Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, Calendar Girl, and Oh! Carol. Known for his melodic gift and emotional lyrics, Sedaka enjoyed a major comeback in the 1970s with chart-toppers like Laughter in the Rain. Over six decades, he wrote numerous songs, influenced countless artists, and earned a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was also nominated for five Grammys between 1959 and 1977.
Raised in Brooklyn, Sedaka was the Juilliard-trained son of a Jewish taxi driver whose passion for music emerged early. He started performing while still a teenager and went on to sustain an extraordinary career that lasted for decades. His formal training began at just 9 years old, when he enrolled in rigorous classical piano studies at the Juilliard School, an experience that helped shape his technical skill and musical discipline from a very young age.
