The first full-length trailer for ‘Digger’, the upcoming comedy-drama directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, has revealed Cruise in one of the most dramatic transformations of his career. Sporting a grey comb-over hairstyle, a heavier appearance, facial changes and a distinct southern accent, Cruise plays an eccentric billionaire oil baron whose own actions may have triggered a global catastrophe.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in October 2026, with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing the project.
Watch: Tom Cruise becomes unrecognisable as Digger Rockwell
The newly released trailer introduces Cruise as Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world”, a wealthy oil magnate who finds himself facing the consequences of a disaster connected to his own empire.
Unlike Cruise’s familiar roles as fearless heroes and skilled operatives, Digger is portrayed as a flawed, eccentric figure desperate to convince the world that he is its saviour.
The trailer shows Cruise with a pot belly, ageing makeup effects and a completely different physical presence, marking a major departure from his usual screen image. The transformation has drawn comparisons with his heavily disguised appearance in the 2008 comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’, where he played studio executive Les Grossman.
The character appears to be caught between arrogance and desperation as he attempts to prevent an ecological crisis that could escalate into a much larger global threat.
Tom Cruise calls ‘Digger’ his most challenging project
Speaking at a Warner Bros event in Los Angeles, Cruise said the film pushed him in ways few previous projects had.
For an actor whose recent career has largely been defined by massive action franchises, particularly the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series, ‘Digger’ represents a return to a more character-driven performance.
