‘Suikoden: The Anime’ set for October 2026 release: Unveils first trailer and new cast

One of the most beloved Japanese role-playing games of the late 1990s is officially making the leap to television. A new trailer for Suikoden: The Anime, based on the iconic game Suikoden II, has been released, offering the first extended look at the highly anticipated adaptation scheduled to premiere in October 2026. The series is directed by Yuzo Sato.

The project marks a major milestone for Konami, as the series is being produced by the company’s animation division, Konami Animation. The anime was first announced during a 2025 livestream celebrating the Suikoden franchise and represents the company’s first large-scale anime production tied to the classic RPG universe.



Alongside the trailer, producers revealed several major voice actors who will bring the story’s central characters to life. The protagonist, named Riliu for the anime adaptation, will be voiced by Toshiki Kumagai, while his close friend and rival Jowy will be voiced by Shimba Tsuchiya.

Originally released for the PlayStation in 1998, Suikoden II is widely considered one of the greatest JRPGs ever created. The story follows two childhood friends who are drawn into a brutal political conflict after a fragile peace treaty collapses between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston.

The anime adaptation will bring this narrative to life, focusing on themes that made the game famous, loyalty, war, destiny, and the complicated bond between friends forced onto opposing sides of a battlefield. The protagonists were once members of the Unicorn Youth Brigade, but their paths diverge as the war escalates and political conspiracies unfold.

Unlike the original game, which allows players to recruit dozens of characters, the anime will streamline the narrative, focusing on key figures while still incorporating elements of the franchise’s famous 108 Stars of Destiny storyline.

The creators have also suggested the possibility of multiple seasons, which would allow the series to explore the large cast and political complexity that made Suikoden II a landmark RPG.

The anime arrives at a time when Konami is actively reviving the Suikoden franchise. Alongside the animated series, the company has announced remastered editions of the original games and additional projects set in the same universe.
