The 74-year-old actor admitted he was surprised by the win, joking from the stage that he thought he might be “too old” to receive the honour. He opted against a lengthy list of thank-yous, saying, “But I'm not gonna spend the next six minutes to thank everybody in the credits of the film and they know I love them.”
Instead, Skarsgård focused on his family, beginning with his wife, Megan Everett-Skarsgård. “I've got to thank my wife. She's been amazing — a sort of brutal support, a tough lover and very educational,” he said. He also credited his children for influencing his performance in the film. “And also, my children have been very educational. I'm playing a father who is a bad father. My children have really taught me what a bad father is.”
Skarsgård and Megan married in 2009 and share two children, Ossian and Kolbjörn. He is also father to Alexander, Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija and Valter from his first marriage to My Skarsgård.
The actor concluded his speech with a pointed appeal to audiences to support theatrical releases, stressing the importance of the big-screen experience. “Hopefully you'll see it in a cinema because they're an [extinct] species now. In a cinema where the lights go down ... cinema should be seen in cinemas.” His remarks drew large applause in the room.
