Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch confirmed the adaptation will carry an R rating, underscoring the studio’s intent to embrace the dark, visceral themes that define Bloodborne rather than dilute them for broader audiences. The game, developed by FromSoftware and originally released exclusively on PlayStation 4 in March 2015, is celebrated for its atmospheric horror, punishing gameplay, and Lovecraft-inspired world of the cursed city of Yharnam.
The animated film will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Sony’s in-house adaptation division, alongside Lyrical Animation and YouTube gaming personality Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye.
Financial backing will be shared between Sony Pictures and Lyrical Media, Lyrical Animation’s parent company.
Jacksepticeye’s involvement is notable due to his status as one of the industry’s most prominent gaming creators, with millions of followers who have watched his Bloodborne playthroughs and gaming content over many years.
What’s known and what’s still under wraps
It is widely noted that choosing animation over live action allows for greater creative freedom in depicting Bloodborne’s surreal monsters, eldritch horrors, and sprawling Victorian-era settings without the constraints of physical effects or the risk of alienating fans with a watered-down interpretation.
The Bloodborne film announcement comes amid a broader push by Sony to capitalize on its vast library of gaming intellectual property.
Recent and upcoming projects include a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation and a film adaptation of Helldivers, reflecting the company’s aggressive move into both animated and live-action game-based cinema.
