Why the show is ending
In a statement released via a video message on Adult Swim’s social channels, Cusack and Hadel confirmed that Smiling Friends will not return beyond Season 3, despite previously being renewed for future seasons. The duo said the decision to end the series was entirely their own, driven by “creative burnout” after years of developing the show and a sense that they had said what they wanted to say with the world and characters they created. They noted that continuing without full enthusiasm might compromise the show’s quality, something they were determined to avoid.
Both creators expressed gratitude for the support from Adult Swim, which backed their choice and encouraged them to take a break and decide on future projects without pressure.
Although Season 3 marks the end of the regular run, Cusack and Hadel left the door slightly open for potential specials or other extensions of the Smiling Friends universe down the line if circumstances allow.
What’s next: Final episodes
Although this season will be the last, fans aren’t done yet. Two additional episodes, produced during the Season 3 run but not previously aired, are slated to premiere on April 12, 2026 on Adult Swim at 11 pm.These episodes were created alongside the season’s original batch and are not considered separate finale specials but part of Season 3’s completed order.
Smiling Friends established itself as a standout in the adult animation space, praised for its surreal style, unconventional storytelling, and emotional depth hidden beneath absurdist comedy.
Over its three seasons and 25 episodes, the series earned a loyal following, with characters like Pim and Charlie becoming iconic in meme culture and online communities.
