“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed away in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends, and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” the family revealed.
“Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis, and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” the statement further read.
“Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support,” it concluded.
Besides health issues, Brendon also had a long history of legal troubles. According to TMZ, the actor was charged with domestic violence in 2017 after drunkenly attacking his girlfriend. His rep had no comment at the time.
Brendon was a series regular on 'Buffy' opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar. He essayed the role of Xander Harris during the series' seven seasons and enjoyed immense popularity. The planned reboot of “Buffy” was recently cancelled at Hulu, and it remains uncertain whether Nicholas would have been involved in the project.
Born on April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, Brendon’s first major role in a feature film came with the Charles Busch satire Psycho Beach Party (2000). According to IMDb, he also starred in the ABC Family Channel original movie Celeste in the City (2004).
