‘The Boroughs’ season 2 update
Netflix has officially canceled The Boroughs, the science-fiction mystery series executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, after just one season. The decision comes less than a month after the show's debut, bringing an abrupt end to one of the streamer’s most anticipated post-Stranger Things projects.

The cancellation is particularly surprising because The Boroughs arrived with considerable industry buzz, a star-studded cast, strong critical reception, and the backing of Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Netflix’s global phenomenon Stranger Things. However, despite those advantages, the streaming giant has opted not to move forward with a second season. The decision was confirmed only weeks after the show premiered on May 21, 2026.

The show was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the duo behind The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. While the Duffer Brothers were not the creators, they served as executive producers through their production company, Upside Down Pictures.

Set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community in New Mexico, The Boroughs followed a group of elderly residents who discovered a mysterious supernatural force lurking beneath their community. The official Netflix synopsis described the story as a battle against an otherworldly threat attempting to steal the one thing the residents had the least of: time.

The premise offered a fresh twist on the supernatural ensemble formula that helped make Stranger Things a cultural phenomenon. Instead of children and teenagers confronting monsters, The Boroughs centered on retirees dealing with grief, aging, mortality, friendship, and cosmic horror.

One of the show's biggest strengths was its veteran ensemble cast. The series featured acclaimed performers including:

The cancellation is especially disappointing because the creative team envisioned The Boroughs as a long-term franchise.

Prior to the cancellation, creator Jeffrey Addiss revealed that the writers had developed a three-season roadmap and even discussed potential spinoff ideas. He noted that the team deliberately avoided ending the first season on a major cliffhanger after learning lessons from the premature cancellation of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Addiss explained that the finale was designed to provide emotional closure while still leaving room for future storytelling. Unfortunately, those plans will now remain unrealized.

The cancellation has generated considerable surprise because The Boroughs was well received by critics.

Shortly after its release, the series earned a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated projects associated with the Duffer Brothers since the early years of Stranger Things.

Publications such as The Guardian commended the show's ability to blend monster-movie thrills with thoughtful explorations of loneliness, aging, and community.

Despite those positive reviews, strong critical acclaim does not always translate into the audience metrics that streaming platforms prioritize when making renewal decisions. Netflix has not publicly disclosed the specific reasons behind the cancellation.
