The cause of death of iconic singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka has been officially revealed, shedding light on the health complications behind the sudden loss of the music legend. Sedaka, who died on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86, passed away due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with kidney failure listed as a contributing factor, according to his death certificate.

This confirmation comes weeks after his death, which had initially been described only as a medical emergency.

What is Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease?

The primary cause of Sedaka’s death, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, is a serious condition in which fats, cholesterol, and other substances build up in artery walls. Over time, this buildup narrows arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and organ damage.

In Sedaka’s case, the condition was severe enough to become fatal, with kidney failure further complicating his health in his final moments.

Reports indicate that Neil Sedaka was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after experiencing a sudden medical emergency. He was admitted on the morning of February 27 and died later the same day.

His death came as a shock, especially as there had been no widely reported signs of serious illness in the days leading up to his hospitalization.

Atherosclerosis is often described as a “silent” disease because it can progress for years without obvious symptoms until a major event, such as a heart attack, occurs.

The addition of kidney failure as a contributing factor suggests that multiple organ systems were affected, a common complication in advanced cardiovascular disease.

Rising to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Sedaka delivered timeless hits such as “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” “Calendar Girl,” and “Oh! Carol.”

Over his career, he wrote or co-wrote more than 500 songs and sold millions of records worldwide. Throughout his long career, the musician has been nominated for five Grammy Awards and worked with some of the biggest names in music including Elton John, Carole King, and Connie Francis during his decades-long career.

He continued performing and engaging with fans well into his later years, maintaining a decades-long presence in the industry.
