At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2026, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, Colombian superstar Karol G achieved a landmark moment in music history by becoming the first Latina artist to headline the festival’s main stage, closing out the first weekend of the event on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

Karol G’s headlining slot came on the final day of Coachella’s first weekend, following performances by fellow headliners Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber earlier in the weekend. Her presence as the Sunday night closer was significant not just artistically, but symbolically, affirming increased representation for Latina artists at one of the world’s most influential music festivals, which has celebrated global music for more than 25 years.

Previously, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline in 2018, and K-pop group BLACKPINK became the first Asian act to top the bill in 2023, with Karol G’s achievement now breaking new ground for Latina artists.

Who is Karol G?

Karol G (Carolina Giraldo Navarro), born in Medellín in 1991, is a leading force in modern Latin music. After early exposure on Colombia’s El Factor X, she moved to New York, signed with Universal Music Latino, and developed a signature blend of reggaeton, Latin trap, and pop.

Breakout hits like “Tusa,” “Bichota,” and “Provenza” showcased her mix of swagger and vulnerability, helping her break barriers.

Her 2023 album Mañana Será Bonito made history as the first Spanish-language album by a woman to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning major Grammy and Latin Grammy recognition.

Collaborations such as “TQG” with Shakira expanded her global reach, while initiatives like Bichota Records reflected her commitment to elevating other women artists.

For Coachella 2026, festivalgoers and livestream audiences alike were primed for a performance that synthesizes Karol G’s eclectic sound and stage presence. Her set on April 12, part of the festival’s first weekend, was scheduled to run late into the night, with expectations that she would perform hits spanning her career as well as newer material from her ongoing musical era.

Coachella’s expanded programming this year also included a broader Latin artist presence beyond the headliners like Gigi Perez, Luísa Sonza, and Mochakk, among others.
