John Alford dies ar 54: British actor John Alford has died in prison at the age of 54. He was found dead at HMP Bure in Norfolk two months after he was jailed for sexually assaulting two teenage girls. Alford, the 54-year-old former star of “Grange Hill” and “London's Burning," whose real name was John Shannon, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting the two teenagers, who were 15 and 14, according to BBC.

The “Wounded” actor’s death was confirmed to the BBC by a prison service spokesman. "John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate," the spokesman said in a statement. Alford of Holloway, north London, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, stood trial at St Albans Crown Court under his real name in September 2025.

Drugs, sex offense charges, and arrests

Alford gained recognition in the 1980s and 1990s through the British TV shows "Grange Hill" and "London's Burning." However, Alford's promising career took a turn for the worse after it was halted by a series of arrests, including a conviction for supplying drugs.

The incident got Alford sacked from "London's Burning." According to the BBC, Alford was sacked from the show and jailed for nine months after he was convicted of supplying cocaine and cannabis to an undercover news reporter of the World journalist in 1997.

In 2024, Alford was charged with sex offenses connected to teenage girls. He was accused of assaulting a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old in 2022. The 14-year-old reportedly told the court that Alford raped her in two different locations inside a house after drinking vodka with him.

A jury was told that the actor bought a bottle of vodka for the two teenage girls, which they drank at a friend's house in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, in April 2022. He was found guilty on four counts of sexual activity with the younger girl, and of sexual assault and assault by penetration on the older teenager.

Alford kept denying the allegations leveled against him before and after he was convicted in September 2025, as reported by TMZ. In January, 2026, a judge sentenced Alford to 8 years, 6 months in prison. He was jailed on January 14, 2026, as Recorder Caroline Overton said the offenses had a "significant and ongoing impact" on his victims' lives.
