Sony Pictures Television has officially terminated longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton following an internal inquiry into allegations that he accessed an online pedophile chatroom while on a commercial flight. The firing occurred shortly after the network placed Thornton on suspension on September 1, 2026, while executives conducted a full review of the situation reported by a fellow traveler.

"Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton’s employment with Wheel of Fortune has been terminated, effective immediately," a representative for Sony stated to TMZ and USA Today in a September 4, 2026 release.

TMZ initially broke the news, reporting that Thornton was on an American Airlines flight heading to Los Angeles in May 2026 when an adjacent passenger noticed his screen displaying what appeared to be a chatroom for pedophiles.


The news outlet published images showing chat logs that included phrases like "couple of cute boys and a hot little girl" alongside "All-you-can-eat Boyfett." The messages also contained multiple mentions of "CP," a widely recognized online abbreviation for child pornography.





Although Thornton has not been charged with any crime, show executives acted swiftly after completing their internal review. Authorities intercepted the flight upon its arrival at Los Angeles International Airport, where law enforcement officers interviewed Thornton regarding the matter before releasing him without arrest.

Insiders informed TMZ that a temporary substitute announcer will fill the role when the upcoming season premieres on September 14, 2026, and Thornton's presence has already been scrubbed from the program's official social media platforms.

The situation unfolded on the American Airlines flight when a fellow traveler observed his laptop screen, reported the activity to a flight attendant, and prompted the flight crew to contact law enforcement ahead of landing.

Thornton's attorney previously informed TMZ that the incident was the result of a major misunderstanding. According to his counsel, Thornton frequently logs onto a suicide prevention forum to support individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts.

However, Thornton stated he was provided an incorrect link that redirected him to lifeline.chat, a platform intended for individuals seeking help with pedophilic impulses. While he maintained that he exited the site immediately after discovering the error, photo evidence of the chat timestamps indicates he remained active in the forum for nearly an hour.
