Grey’s Anatomy played a major role in giving wings to Eric Dane’s career. When Dane joined the hit medical drama as Dr Mark Sloan, fans quickly fell for his charm and confidence. The character became an instant sensation and turned Dane into a household name. The show gave him massive visibility and proved he could balance charisma with emotional depth. Dane passed away after a battle with ALS, a progressive neurological disease that gradually robs patients of muscle control, affecting movement, speech, and eventually breathing. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Melissa Bank, reported New York Times. A fan favorite during his time on the long-running ABC medical drama, Dane’s portrayal of Dr Sloan helped make him a household name and cemented his place in pop culture.



"He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," Bank said in the statement.

Dane was born on November 8, 1972, in San Francisco. He was the eldest of two sons born to William Dane, an architect and interior designer, and Leah (Cohn) Dane, a homemaker, according to his biography on abc.com. In 1993, Dane moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams and made his television debut the same year on The Wonder Years. He went on to take small roles in popular sitcoms including Saved by the Bell and Married... with Children, slowly building his resume. Dane married actress and model Rebecca Gayheart in 2004. She survives him, along with their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia.


Lady luck changed his stars in 2006, when his career-defining moment arrived with his entry into Grey’s Anatomy during its second season as Dr Mark Sloan. Initially planned as a short-term role, as reported by The People, overwhelming fan response turned the character into a series regular. Known as 'McSteamy', Dane’s portrayal of the charming head of plastic surgery fueled weekly drama and became iconic, especially after the now-famous towel scene. He appeared in 139 episodes of the long-running hit.

From 2014 to 2018, Dane starred as Admiral Tom Chandler on The Last Ship. However, in an interview with Glamour, as reported by People, he later admitted that the character felt too similar to his earlier role as Mark Sloan. Dane also appeared in films such as Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, American Carnage, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
