Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expands to Switch 2 and Xbox with free playable demo

Square Enix has released a free playable demo of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S platforms, marking a major milestone as the second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy expands beyond PlayStation and PC platforms. The announcement comes as anticipation builds ahead of the game’s full June 3, 2026 release on these consoles.

What the demo includes

The demo provides an extended look at the beginning of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, covering Chapters 1 and 2 of the full game. Players start at the pivotal Nibelheim flashback, featuring Cloud Strife and Sephiroth’s early story beats, and then enter the Grasslands region, allowing for exploration, combat, and side activities.


According to Square Enix, the demo offers several hours of gameplay, significantly more than a traditional teaser, and includes core features such as the updated Synergy Abilities combat system and exploration sequences that define the title’s hybrid action-RPG mechanics.

Saving progress and bonuses

One of the most player-friendly features of the demo is the ability to carry over save data to the full game. Progress made in the demo, including story advancement and exploration, will transfer to the complete version when it launches, unlocking bonuses such as a Kupo Charm (increasing material drop rates) and a Survival Set with early useful items.

This carryover functionality also extends benefits such as achievement unlocking in the full version, even if achievements aren’t attainable within the demo itself.

Availability and platform expansion

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth originally launched on PlayStation 5 in February 2024, with a PC release following in January 2025. The new demo release marks the first time that Nintendo and Xbox owners have been able to sample the second chapter of the remake trilogy ahead of launch, significantly widening access beyond Sony’s platform exclusivity period.

Players can download the demo via the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 and the Microsoft Store/Xbox Store on Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox version also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning the demo can be accessed and played on both console and PC.

With the demo now accessible worldwide, players can experience a substantial portion of Rebirth’s opening chapters for free, test performance and mechanics on their preferred hardware, and begin their journey ahead of the June 3, 2026 release.
