Final Fantasy 9 returns in exciting May 2026 release, Vivi gets the spotlight

One of gaming’s most beloved characters is stepping back into the spotlight. A newly announced Final Fantasy 9 picture book will bring the franchise’s iconic black mage Vivi back in an original story that explores his life before the events of the classic RPG. The upcoming release continues Square Enix’s efforts to expand the legacy of one of the most cherished entries in the long-running series.

Square Enix is revisiting that world with a brand-new illustrated book centered on Vivi.

The book is scheduled to launch on May 19, 2026, with a listed retail price of $17.99 USD. While the currently listed version features Japanese text, an English edition is widely expected to follow.

A story about Vivi and Grandpa Quan

The illustrated release tells a gentle prequel story that takes place before the events of the game. The narrative begins after Grandpa Quan rescues Vivi from the ocean, a moment familiar to fans of the original title. From there, the story focuses on their daily life together and the lessons Vivi learns about the world.

According to the official description, the pair spend their days sharing meals, forming friendships, and living a peaceful life together. The story gradually builds toward the emotional moment when Vivi eventually leaves home to begin the journey players recognize from the game.

The project carries strong ties to the original game thanks to the involvement of key creative figures including Kazuhiko Aoki, event designer for Final Fantasy 9, who is writing the story. Toshiyuki Itahana, the game’s character designer, provides the illustrations.

The artwork is expected to feature fresh illustrations that expand on the game’s distinctive visual style, offering fans a new way to experience the world of Gaia.

The new release is described as a 48-page illustrated picture book, placing it in the same category as collectible franchise storybooks and art-focused companion pieces. Early previews highlight vibrant artwork and a soft, heartfelt tone that matches the character-driven storytelling Final Fantasy 9 is known for.

The book is designed to function both as a standalone story and as additional lore that deepens fans’ understanding of Vivi’s early life.
