Bruce Campbell, the cult-film icon, known for his role in The Evil Dead franchise, announced Monday(March 2) that he has been diagnosed with a form of cancer that is “treatable” but not “curable,” prompting him to cancel upcoming appearances and put his work schedule on hold as he begins treatment.

In a message to fans Monday(March 2), Campbell spoke openly about his diagnosis:

“These days when someone is having a ‘health issue’ it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that — I’m having one of those,” the actor said. “It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock, it was to me too.


Who is Bruce Campbell?


Bruce Campbell (born June 22, 1958) is an American actor, producer, writer and director best known for playing Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise. A cult film icon celebrated for his slapstick and physically demanding performances, he later gained mainstream recognition through series such as Burn Notice, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.

His credits include Bubba Ho-Tep, cameos in the Spider-Man trilogy and a Saturn Award-winning turn in Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Campbell said he would not provide further details about his diagnosis and will step back from appearances and work commitments to focus on treatment, aiming to get “as well as I possibly can” over the summer.

Campbell is canceling several summer appearances, saying treatment must come first.

“There are several cons this year summer that I have to cancel. Big regrets on my part. Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand.”

Even as he begins treatment, Campbell said he is looking ahead, with plans to return to touring in the fall to support his new film Ernie & Emma, which he directs and stars in.
