Emmy Awards 2026: Jean Smart makes Emmy history as Hollywood celebrates TV’s biggest night; Check full list of winners

Jean Smart added another major achievement to her Emmy resume Monday night, winning her fifth Primetime Emmy for her performance as a determined stand-up comedian in HBO Max’s Hacks. Noah Wyle also took home his second Emmy, earning recognition for his portrayal of a deeply affected emergency room doctor in The Pitt. Smart made history with her latest victory as she became the first actor to win the best comedy actress award for every season of a series throughout its entire run. Hacks concluded its final season this year.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus remains the only other woman to come close to that feat after winning the comedy actress prize six times during the seven-season run of Veep. The night also produced a few surprises. Stephen Root of Widow’s Bay defeated the expected favorite, Harrison Ford of Shrinking, to win the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.




Rhea Seehorn earned her first Primetime Emmy for best drama actress for her role in Apple TV’s Pluribus. She plays a woman struggling against an alien hive mind in the science-fiction drama. During her acceptance speech, Seehorn turned to her fellow nominees, including Keri Russell of The Diplomat and Zendaya of Euphoria, and cited feminist activist Gloria Steinem, who died earlier this month at age 92.

The event was hosted by Mariska Hargitay, who starred for many years in the NBC series 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'. This choice deviated from the recent trend of selecting a comedian to emcee America’s most prestigious TV awards ceremony.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards aired live on NBC and were streamed on Peacock. The winners of the awards were chosen by Television Academy members representing over 27,000 people in various television professions, such as writers, directors, actors, producers, and craft people.
