US Tariff Refund Portal: In a big relief to businesses that paid tariffs imposed under the Trump administration , Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is set to activate an online refund portal on Monday (April 27, 2026) starting at 8 AM.

The rollout follows a February 20 Supreme Court ruling in a 6-3 decision that found President Donald Trump exceeded his authority when he imposed broad import taxes on goods from nearly every country in April, 2025. His administration had justified the tariffs by declaring the US trade deficit a “national emergency” under a 1977 law. The Court rejected that argument, reaffirming that Congress and not the president holds the power to levy taxes.

The decision has triggered an unprecedented reversal of an estimated $166 billion in tariff payments made by more than 330,000 U.S. importers across 53 million shipments, according to online platform Futbolete. Despite the scale, officials caution that refunds will not be immediate.

CBP has said that reimbursements will be processed in phases, beginning with the most recent payments. Even for approved claims, businesses should expect a timeline of 60 to 90 days before receiving funds, assuming applications meet strict compliance requirements.

Not all importers will qualify for the initial refund phase. CBP has limited early eligibility to cases where duties were estimated but not finalized, or entries made within 80 days of final accounting. As of April 14, only 56,497 importers had fully registered in the agency’s electronic payment system, making them eligible to claim from a pool of $127 billion, including interest.

While importers are eligible for refunds, consumers who indirectly paid higher prices through retailers are not automatically included. The refund system directs payments to businesses, which are not required to pass reimbursements back to customers.

As the portal goes live Monday morning, tens of thousands of importers are expected to begin filing claims. But officials and advisors alike warn that the process will demand precision, patience, and extensive documentation.

Even a single error, a missing form or incorrect entry could result in a denied refund, with one wrong number or incomplete document enough for a claim to be rejected outright. There is also no guarantee the system will operate smoothly once it opens to nationwide demand, raising concerns about potential delays and technical strain during the rollout.
