Kroger is rolling out a new discount program aimed at Americans relying on government assistance, offering 20 percent off fresh produce and half-price membership perks just weeks after a federal shutdown left millions facing uncertainty over SNAP benefits.

Kroger’s “Verified Savings Program,” announced in late December, gives eligible shoppers 20 percent off fresh produce and 50 percent off its premium Boost memberships. Those who are eligible for government assistance programs, including SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, or housing support, can access the discounts.

The initiative arrives weeks after the federal shutdown at the end of 2025, which briefly halted SNAP funding, leaving tens of millions of households in uncertainty.

According to Futbolete website, analysts say the timing is deliberate, targeting a population that provides a steady cash flow for the food industry.

Kroger, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a leading US retailer operating supermarkets, pharmacies, and fuel centers. It offers groceries, household goods, and private brands under banners like Fred Meyer, Ralphs, and Dillons, combining fresh food with digital convenience.

How to avail the benefits of the discount program

Shoppers must verify their eligibility through SheerID, a platform that confirms participation in any of the fourteen listed assistance programs. Once approved, a 20 percent discount on fresh produce is automatically applied to their Kroger digital account, valid through January 31.

The program also offers 50 percent off Boost memberships, which include free shipping, gas discounts, and double fuel points.

Michael Rhodes, coordinator of an Indiana food bank network, said the program is helpful but limited, noting that the fresh produce discount is temporary and the Boost membership remains unaffordable for many SNAP households.

Where to find the program

With roughly 2,800 locations, Kroger operates stores in 35 states across the US.
