M K Narayanan: The NSA took a break from anti-terror sermons on TV and played a key negotiating role with new allies, jotting down demands and ensuring that these reached Sonia Gandhi���s desk well before new-found friends were ushered in to meet the Congress president.
P C Haldar: The IB chief was the logistics man whose men kept an eye on the most vulnerable MPs in the flock. Besides organising the venue for many a secret rendezvous, he kept IB guest houses ready for secret meetings that led to the thaw between the Congress and the SP. He also brought in Mehbooba on a special plane from Srinagar for UPA.
CBI chief Vijay Shanker: His Master���s Minder. Just a few months ago, he had almost given Mayawati a clean chit in the disproportionate assets case, but once the Congress-SP deal was signed, did a somersault and reopened cases against the BSP chief, even as he is about to exonerate Mulayam and family members in the disproportionate assets cases. The man obviously has no need for a fig leaf.
T K A Nair: The busiest season so far for the man who was otherwise comfortable being chief guest at Malayali festivals in the capital. Addressed grievances of new allies, was part of the negotiations so knew the demands of each and ensured that secretaries and government babus acted on these demands.
The Wheeler Dealers: In the era of coalition governments, their tribe is increasing. It���s in razor thin situations that their skills are particularly put to test. They walk around pots of money, possess immense ability to organise meetings at short notice.
The Spin Master: The prime minister is ���reluctant��� to play the numbers game goes the spin, when the reality is that Manmohan Singh individually called up even one MP parties to seek support. They regularly supply SMS story briefs to embedded friends. It was the spin master who convinced the prime minister to be all things to all people: he sought Akali support invoking his Punjabi origin and AGP support as a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam.
