X’s ‘About This Account’ feature shows many MAGA accounts operate from outside the US

Elon Musk's social media platform X rolled out its “About This Account” feature, revealing account creation dates, app usage, and locations. Many MAGA and Gaza-related profiles appear to operate abroad, sparking political reactions. Accuracy issue...

Microblogging platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, recently began introducing an “About This Account” feature, which shows details such as when an account was created, how the app was downloaded, and the user’s geographic location.

The location element has caused the biggest stir, as many right-wing “America First” profiles presenting themselves as US-based were shown as operating from abroad.

Political opponents quickly seized on the information. Liberal political commentator Harry Sisson celebrated the findings, saying, “This is easily one of the greatest days on this platform.”

Sisson added, “Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this.”

Another left-wing creator, Micah Erfan, highlighted the issue by sharing a gallery of MAGA profiles reportedly posting from Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan and Thailand. Alongside the images, Erfan declared, “This is total armageddon for the online right.”

However, the pattern has not just been observed in the US. Some accounts discussing alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza now seem to be misleading users about where they post from.

One example is Motasm A Dalloul, known on X as “@AbujomaaGaza”, who describes himself as a “Gaza-based journalist” and has more than 197,000 followers. X lists his activity as coming from Poland.

However, this feature might not be accurate, according to some. Several users, including well-known influencers, have said their own listed locations are wrong. Mikhaila Peterson, daughter of Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson, shared that X displayed her location as “Argentina” despite her having never visited the country.

X’s director of product, Nikita Bier, acknowledged limitations, noting that “data was not 100% for old accounts” and hinted that “a few rough edges … will be resolved by Tuesday.”

Bier also stressed that “if any data is incorrect, it will be updated periodically based on best available information. This happens on a delayed and randomised schedule to preserve privacy”.

The confusion may probably also stem from factors such as previous travel, global account teams, VPN use or outdated IP information.
