X will soon have a 'Made with AI' feature that lets users flag posts containing artificially-generated or manipulated content, including images, video, and text. The feature, first teased by app researcher Nima Owji, allows the content creator to disclose that the post was created or altered using AI tools.

In January 2026, X released a `Manipulated Media’ feature that automatically flagged deceptive edits that could cause harm or confusion.

Screenshots shared by Owji on X show a prominent `Made with AI‘ mark that’s visible on posts. Owji also suggests that failing to label AI-generated content could count as a violation of X’s rules. X already applies watermarks to images and videos created with its Grok chatbot, but this latest feature may mean that the platform wants a user-facing AI flag for a broader range of content.

The move comes as governments and regulators push platforms to get more serious about provenance and misinformation. India has directed platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to clearly label AI-generated content and ensure that they carry embedded identifiers.

The government has set a three-hour deadline for social media companies to take down AI-generated or deepfake content once it is flagged by the government or ordered by a court.

To curb misuse, companies are also required to deploy automated tools to detect and prevent the circulation of illegal, sexually exploitative, or deceptive AI-generated content under the new rules.

Other tech giants such as Meta have also announced similar `Made with AI‘ labels for photos, videos, and audio, relying on both detection signals and self-disclosure by users.

Research suggests that such tags can shape how users perceive credibility and engagement, with some evidence that audiences treat AI-tagged content as less trustworthy or less worth sharing.
