“The arrival of such advanced technology in India is a major milestone for our self-reliance in electronics," Vaishnaw said at the inauguration of TDK Corporation's facility in Sohna. Vaishnaw said it will manufacture 20 crore battery packs annually. India requires 50 crore cell packs every year.
With the launch of the facility, lithium-ion batteries used in mobile phones, wearables, hearables such as watches, earbuds, AirPods, and laptops will be manufactured domestically. The plant is also set to create 5,000 jobs.
The factory has been established under the Centre's Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme. TDK is an electronic components manufacturer operating more than 250 manufacturing, research and development (R&D), and sales sites in over 30 countries and regions worldwide.
Set up with an investment of around Rs 3,000 crore, the factory will begin initial production in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2025 and gradually scale up to hit the 20 crore battery production target.
Semicon India
Speaking at the closing session of the Semicon India summit here, Sinha said the next stage of value addition will come from semiconductors. "We are leading programmes for designing, fabrication and packaging of semiconductors. The value addition will be around 15-35% depending upon the complexity of the electronic device," he said.
The government will work on increasingly placing chips manufactured in India in products across categories, he said.
Semicon India saw a footfall of 30,000 visitors and industry participation from 48 countries and 350 companies, who exhibited across 1,300 booths, Ajit Manocha, president and CEO of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (Semi), said. Semi organises Semicon summits in seven other countries.
