Toing: Swiggy launches new app for affordable food options

Food and grocery delivery major Swiggy has launched a new app called ‘Toing’ for affordable food options in Pune. The development comes at a time when the food delivery competition is heating up following ridehailing platform Rapido’s entry through its subsidiary Ownly.

The app is currently available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store and live in four to five pincodes in Pune.

“Toing focuses on affordable food options. Its target group is college-going students and early-career professionals, who don’t have high disposable incomes but have the intent to purchase,” said a person close to the matter.

A quick look at Swiggy’s new app shows items such as burgers, sandwiches, fries, rolls, shakes and coffee on offer, among other snacks and beverages. It also has mini meals, cakes and desserts on the menu. These items are priced within Rs 150.

Currently, the app’s platform fee is Rs 12, unlike the main app, which has a platform fee of Rs 14.99. Toing also offers free delivery for orders above Rs 99.

The Bengaluru-based company has deliberately chosen Pune for the pilot instead of Bengaluru, usually the testbed for startups. “Pune has a large number of students and early-career professionals, which makes it the ideal place to test such an offering,” said the person quoted earlier. “The Pune market remains underpenetrated compared to Bengaluru.”

Queries sent to Swiggy remained unanswered at the time of the publication.

The food delivery competition has intensified with new apps and 10-minute delivery being launched by quick commerce apps.

To penetrate the market faster, Rapido’s Ownly, which went live just last month, has kept commissions from restaurants lower.

In July, Swiggy launched its 99 store, which offered single meals ranging between Rs 49 and Rs 149. The service is available in over 175 cities, including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pune, and Chennai.
