Tim Cook cites three reasons for stepping down as Apple CEO after 15 years

Tim Cook has brought his long run as Apple CEO to a close with what he described as a carefully planned succession.

Speaking at an all-hands meeting in the Steve Jobs Theatre on Tuesday, he told employees that three key conditions had finally aligned: a strong business, a well-filled product pipeline, and John Ternus being ready to take over.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Cook said all three factors had come together at the same time. “These three things all intersected and they intersect now. And so now was the time,” Cook said.


Apple confirmed that Ternus, currently the company’s hardware chief, will become CEO on September 1. Cook will remain involved as executive chairman.

Cook made it clear that he wanted the transition to be handled in a very structured way. He told staff he aimed for “a textbook succession plan, the best in the world”—and even joked that business schools might one day study it.

The outgoing Apple chief said the timing made sense given the company’s performance and internal readiness, describing it as a planned and deliberate handover rather than a sudden decision.

On Apple’s current performance, Cook pointed to the company’s most recent holiday quarter, which he said was its strongest ever. He also spoke positively about Apple’s product lineup, describing the pipeline as “incredible”. This includes a foldable iPhone expected later this year, new AI-focused wearable devices, and further expansion into smart home technology.

Health rumours addressed

Cook also responded directly to speculation about his health. “I am healthy. My energy is high, and I plan to be in this new role for a long time,” he said, according to Gurman, with the remarks appearing intended to counter rumours about his decision to step aside as CEO.

Ternus eyes AI opportunity

Incoming CEO John Ternus, aged 50, said this is “the most exciting time to be building products and services at Apple” in his career. He told employees the company is “about to change the world once again.”

He also highlighted artificial intelligence as a major opportunity for Apple, saying it would “create almost unlimited potential” across its products and services.

“There can only be one CEO at a time,” said Cook, adding that he will support Ternus as he takes on the top role. Cook also said he would not step away completely, but would shift focus towards Apple’s global government and geopolitical relationships, an area in which he has built long-standing connections with leaders in the United States, China, and other countries.
