Chinese video-sharing platform TikTok has gone live on the web in India after nearly five years, with the site now accessible to some users.

TikTok ban in India

In January 2021, India permanently blocked 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, almost seven months after issuing show-cause notices to ban them following a prolonged border standoff with China. The apps were blocked under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act and relevant provisions under the IT rules 2009.

ByteDance launched TikTok in 2017. It was banned in India in 2020.

The news comes a few days after the White House launched an official TikTok account on Tuesday, taking advantage of the short video app's more than 170 million US users to spread the messages of President Donald Trump.
