The future of Ai in India: A Nobel Laureate’s perspective
The Surfin Ai Fintech Summit's seventh global edition showcased advancements in intelligent finance and AI-driven customer solutions. Esteemed speakers, including Nobel Laureate Michael Spence and Dr. Amar Patnaik, underscored the concept of princ...

The day featured Dr. Yanan Wu, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Surfin Group, alongside Nobel laureate Michael Spence and former Member of Parliament Dr. Amar Patnaik, across multiple panel discussions and fireside chats, a book signing, and networking with industry leaders, all built around one question: what should finance become when Ai can think, decide, and act?
The day's headline moment came from Professor Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences and author of Permacrisis, whose keynote stated that India isn't just catching up in Ai, it has the scale, digital infrastructure and technical talent to become a prominent player. It set the tone for a summit less interested in whether India belongs in the Ai conversation, and more focused on what it does with the head start it already has.
India's approach: Principles before law
Dr Amar Patnaik, whose public policy career sits at the intersection of governance, financial systems and data protection, was direct about why India isn't rushing toward a dedicated AiAct. "The answer is a resounding no at this point in time," he said, pointing to guiding principles meant to keep innovation moving while formal rules catch up. He flagged SEBI's move toward what he called "a KYC for agents," requiring Ai systems making financial decisions to be registered and traceable, paired with a human principal who stays responsible, including a kill switch if an agent "goes rogue." As he put it, "The idea is democratising Ai."From Digital India to intelligent finance
Rather than treating Ai as a technology upgrade, the summit examined how intelligence is changing the way financial systems are built, governed and experienced. The day opened by placing India's digital infrastructure at the centre of a global discussion, before turning to Bharat, and how Ai agents could make financial services more personalised and accessible for diverse new customers. From there, discussions confronted the harder edge of that promise, as Ai moves from supporting financial decisions to executing them outright; accountability and human oversight took centre stage. The conversation carried into the next generation of investors, examining how Ai-driven access to financial analysis could reshape who gets to build wealth in India.
Across every session, one question resurfaced: what should the next generation of financial services look like once intelligence is built into the system itself? For Surfin, under Dr Wu's leadership, the answer was less about deploying more powerful technology, and more about bringing intelligence, inclusion and customer-centricity together, with the governance to make that transformation sustainable.
Beyond the stage
The day's sharpest exchanges didn't end when the panels did. As formal sessions gave way to networking through the evening, attendees carried the debates from the stage into conversations with speakers, before the day closed with a book signing. Michael Spence signed copies of Permacrisis, Ronit Ghose signed and handed over Future Money, and Yinglan Tan signed Against All Odds. What finance becomes next
Ai is no longer a future proposition for financial services; it is becoming the infrastructure through which financial decisions are made, and customers engage. As Bengaluru's gathering made clear, the conversation has moved beyond what Ai can do, towards a far more consequential one: what should finance become when Ai can think, decide and act?Disclaimer - The above content is non-editorial, and TIL hereby disclaims any and all warranties, expressed or implied, relating to it, and does not guarantee, vouch for or necessarily endorse any of the content.
