Tesla ramps up India hiring: all you need to know

Tesla starts hiring in India, signalling its upcoming entry into the market. The development follows CEO Elon Musk’s recent US meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tesla has posted 13 job openings spanning customer-facing and back-end roles, positions are available in Mumbai and Delhi. At least five of the positions, including service technician and various advisory roles.


Why has Tesla stayed away so far?

High import duties had been a major hurdle. India has now reduced basic customs duty on high-end EVs priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%.

India aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, boosting electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Tesla is looking for new growth avenues amid slowing global sales. India’s EV market, with sales of approximately 100,000 units in 2023, remains small compared to China’s 11 million.

Will Tesla set up manufacturing in India?

Musk was slated to visit India in April 2024 but postponed due to internal challenges at Tesla. Tesla has been advocating for lower import duties before committing to investments. New Delhi in March slashed the import duty on EVs for companies that set up local factories with at least 41.5 billion rupees ($500 million) of investment.
