New Delhi: Elon Musk has been appointed to Twitter's board of directors, just one day after it was revealed that he is the company's largest shareholder, with a 9.2% stake.

"I’m excited to share that we’re appointing @elonmusk to our board! Through conversations with Elon in recent weeks, it became clear to us that he would bring great value to our Board," CEO Parag Agrawal said in a tweet.

Musk declared a 9.2% stake in Twitter Inc, worth about $3 billion, on Monday and causing the stock to surge more than 27%.

Musk's decision, which was announced in a regulatory filing, comes after he tweeted that he was "seriously considering" creating a new social media platform, while challenging Twitter's commitment to free expression.
