The Asia Internet Coalition, which counts Meta, Google, Amazon and several other US-based tech companies among its members has sought a time of up to 18 months for the implementation of various provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

In a letter addressed to Union and state electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the industry association has said that implementation of the provisions of the DPDP Act would require structural changes in organisations and businesses and they are likely to face a significant amount of challenges during the course of such transitions.

To implement provisions such as obtaining consent from Indian users for the processing of their personal data and development of a consent management framework, big tech companies would have to make structural changes to their organisation and businesses, the industry group said in its letter on Thursday.

"Consent notices would be required to be stored in an accessible manner for Data Fiduciaries to modify or erase Data Principal's personal data," the group said.
