Tech giant Meta has reportedly laid off employees in its Reality Labs division, particularly affecting teams within Oculus Studios and hardware development, the Verge reported.

The report added, one of the impacted projects is Supernatural, a VR fitness game Meta acquired for over $400 million. The company said the move aims to boost efficiency while remaining committed to content development for Quest and Supernatural.

While the exact number of layoffs is not yet known, these latest layoffs follow a broader round of job cuts in February, when Meta reduced its workforce by nearly 3,600 roles—about 5% of its global headcount—citing performance-related concerns. The downsising aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to build a leaner, more agile organisation.

The February layoffs triggered backlash on social media, with many accusing the company of prioritising executive pay over regular employees’ livelihoods.

Beyond public criticism, several former Meta employees had alleged that the layoffs were not solely performance-based. Some claimed they were let go despite being on approved leave or for reasons unrelated to job performance.

As one of the world’s leading social media platforms, Meta earns most of its revenue from advertising. That revenue stream fuels the company’s multibillion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, as it competes to lead in the fast-evolving landscape of generative AI technology.

Meanwhile, Meta also announced plans to launch its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in India soon, the company revealed in a blog post on Wednesday, signaling its continued focus on wearable tech and immersive experiences.
