Food delivery platform Swiggy has hiked its platform fee to Rs 15 for every order. This is the third revision by the company in as many weeks amid robust festive season demand and after widening losses during the April-June quarter.

The restaurant aggregator had increased its platform fee to Rs 14 per order from Rs 12 during Independence Day due to high demand, which was later rolled back. As per information on the Swiggy application, the platform fee is inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The hike comes close on the heels of rival Zomato hiking the platform fee. The Eternal-owned food delivery app has hiked its platform fee to Rs 12 from Rs 10.

Both Zomato and Swiggy had introduced the platform fee, which is a per-order levy on customers, in 2023, and have gradually increased the amount since then. It varies from city to city and is revised on the basis of demand.

The latest hike comes amid tempering growth in the online food delivery segment. For the April-June period, Zomato posted a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 16% in gross order value (GoV) at Rs 10,769 crore. This is slower than the over 20% growth it was clocking until a few quarters ago. Swiggy’s GoV grew 18.8% on-year to Rs 8,086 crore during the same period.

"The strategy of raising platform fees ahead of the festive season and retaining the higher rate later has been in place since last year, when the fee was increased from Rs 6 to Rs 10. The platform fee has increased by 6x since its introduction on the Zomato platform," said Karan Taurani, executive vice president, Elara Capital.
