The development follows a statement by US president Donald Trump, who confirmed that a 25% tariff would apply to all smartphones manufactured abroad and sold in the American market, not just Apple devices as initially implied. “It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product, otherwise it wouldn't be fair,” Trump told reporters. “When they build their plant here, there is no tariff.”

The clarification has raised concerns within the smartphone industry, especially with the proposed deadline for implementation approaching at the end of June. According to South Korean publication FNNews, Samsung is particularly exposed, as it has no smartphone manufacturing presence in the US. Most of its devices are made in Vietnam and other overseas locations.
The report warns that prices for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models could rise significantly, with the Fold 7 potentially reaching $2,500. This would represent a sharp increase from the previous generation.
Parts of South Korea’s tech industry have reportedly declared an “emergency” in response to the threat. The US premium smartphone market is a key focus for Samsung, and a substantial price hike could undermine its competitiveness against local companies such as Apple.
However, there is still uncertainty over whether the tariffs will be implemented.
