The once-strong partnership began to show signs of strain in late 2023, when Altman was briefly removed from OpenAI—Microsoft was caught unawares by the boardroom turmoil. Since then, a number of developments have pointed to a possible drift.
For instance, Microsoft has started developing its own AI models, putting it in direct competition with OpenAI. It has also been testing models from other companies such as Meta, DeepSeek, and Elon Musk’s xAI.
Microsoft was also noticeably absent from OpenAI’s major Stargate event. Meanwhile, Nadella quietly hired Mustafa Suleyman, cofounder of Google’s DeepMind, and a known rival of Altman.
