Paytm Payments Bank has disabled international transactions on its debit cards. In an emailed communication to its customers, the bank has said that such transactions have been temporarily suspended. It did not give a timeline for when such transactions will get back online.

“We are improving for (the) better, the bank will be temporarily disabling international transactions on debit cards,” the bank said in its email. ET has seen a copy of the communication.

This move comes at a time when Paytm Payments Bank is not being allowed to onboard fresh customers by the Reserve Bank of India.

While the bank did not say why they are doing this, a senior banker with a private sector lender said that by disabling such transactions they could be abiding by a regulatory instruction.

RBI mandates every bank to disable international payments by default. Only customers who want to undertake such transactions enable it through net banking or app banking. Paytm may be abiding by that norm by disabling such transactions by default, he said.

Paytm did not respond immediately to ET’s queries.
