In a blog post titled ‘Introducing OpenAI for India,' the company said, “To better serve users and partners in India, OpenAI also plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, alongside its existing presence in New Delhi.”
This expansion coincides with OpenAI becoming the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ new data centre business, starting with 100 megawatts (MW) of capacity as part of the $500 billion global Stargate AI infrastructure initiative. The Stargate project aims to build AI data centres for training and inference, backed by major investors.
On the initiative, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale.”
Separately, Tata Group also plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across the company over the next few years, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees.
