Move over Wikipedia, Elon’s coming with Grokipedia

Billionaire Elon Musk has revealed that his artificial intelligence company xAI is developing a new platform called ‘Grokipedia’. He claims it will be a major upgrade to Wikipedia and a better way for people to access information.

Sharing the news on X, Musk posted, “We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”



Musk’s comments were in response to venture capitalist David Sacks, who is also the White House’s advisor on AI and cryptocurrency. Sacks criticised Wikipedia, saying: “Wikipedia is hopelessly biased. An army of left-wing activists maintain the bios and fight reasonable corrections’’.

He went on to say that the issue is made worse by the fact that Wikipedia often appears at the top of Google search results and is now used as a trusted source for training AI models.

“This is a huge problem,” he said.

Sacks was replying to conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson, who had also shared concerns about Wikipedia’s reliability and neutrality.

Musk has publicly criticised Wikipedia in the past as well. Earlier this year, he voiced frustration after the site added an entry accusing him of making a Nazi salute at a Trump inauguration. Musk vehemently denied the claim.

“Defund Wikipedia until balance is restored!” he said back then, in reply to a post on X that criticised Wikipedia’s “mentions of political extremism”.

In December 2024, Musk urged people to stop giving money to Wikipedia, calling it ‘Wokepedia’ due to what he described as excessive spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In 2023, he offered to donate $1 billion to Wikipedia, but only if it agreed to change its name to 'Dickipedia' for at least one year. He repeated the offer again in 2024.
