Microsoft Teams turns snitch, will tell your boss if you’re in office or not

The tech giant announced that under a new policy, the professional communication platform automatically detects whether employees are present in office using Wi-Fi signals, and updates their work location status accordingly.
The new feature effectively allows employers to track office attendance in real time by linking employee devices to organisational Wi-Fi networks.
This change will roll out globally beginning December.
Needless to say, the recent update to the Teams platform has caused a stir online and in corporate circles.
Privacy backlash
Microsoft maintains that features requiring broader location sharing need user agreement but its Wi-Fi-driven location system is designed to be largely automatic. The controversy has amplified calls for more transparent workplace surveillance policies and user consent mechanisms, with employees voicing anxiety about “always-on” monitoring and the erosion of trust between staff and management.
This is not the first time the company has faced such a backlash. In 2020, Microsoft’s Productivity Score tool drew criticism for allegedly tracking employee behaviour too closely.
Internal push
Within Microsoft, the move is part of an aggressive push to roll back remote work policies.
According to internal memos, the company wants to build a “community of immediacy” as artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates workplace dynamics. Microsoft said the “most meaningful breakthroughs happen together, in real-time”.
Employees living within 50 miles of the company’s Redmond headquarters are expected to be in office at least three days a week by February 2026. Microsoft has planned phased introductions for other US and international offices.
