Meta’s Threads crosses 500 million monthly users; rolls out Communities feature

Meta’s Threads platform has crossed 500 million monthly active users three years after its launch, the company shared in a blog post on Tuesday.

The company announced a series of updates, including the official roll out of its Communities feature, which allows users to participate in discussions around specific interests and topics, beyond its beta phase.

The company is introducing a Communities Hub that will allow users to discover and switch between communities directly from the main menu.


Communities will also receive custom icons, giving them ‘distinct visual identities’ across the platform. Users will be able to track the progress of topics that are close to becoming full-fledged communities, while Threads is expanding its Community Champions programme to recognise more contributors.

The platform is also beginning to localise communities by introducing native-language tags in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, which will help users discover and engage with communities in their preferred language. In the coming weeks, Threads plans to expand Live Chats to more communities and add features such as co-hosting and the ability to share chat highlights directly to users' feeds.

Separately, Threads is launching a new content-control feature called ‘Your Algo’, which allows users to adjust the topics they see in their feeds. Users can indicate whether they want to see more or less content related to specific topics and choose how long those preferences remain active, with options ranging from one to seven days.

The feature builds on ‘Dear Algo’, introduced in February year, which lets users provide feedback to the platform's recommendation system. Both tools will be available through a single management hub.

‘Your Algo’ is rolling out initially in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The company did not clarify when the feature would be rolled out in India.
