Meta to appeal ‘unjustified’ $1.3 billion EU fine over US data transfers
“No country has done more than the US to align with European rules via their latest reforms, while transfers continue largely unchallenged to countries such as China,” Meta said in a statement.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said on Monday slapped the social network giant with a record finesaying that Meta’s continued data transfers to the US didn’t address “the risks to the fundamental rights and freedoms” of people whose data was being transfered across the Atlantic.
“No country has done more than the US to align with European rules via their latest reforms, while transfers continue largely unchallenged to countries such as China,” the statement added.
The DPC initially acknowledged that Meta had continued its EU-US data transfers in good faith and that a fine would be unnecessary. However, this was overruled by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).
This is the latest in a long list of cases where Facebook and thousands of other technology companies face stringent rules on data privacy in the EU.
