Medtronic, a US-based medical technology major on Wednesday has announced an investment of $60 million to expand its Global IT (GIT) Centre in Hyderabad.

The investments would be rolled out over the next three to five years and would create 300 new jobs.

GIT Centre in Hyderabad is Medtronic’s first large-scale IT center outside of US. The centre would focus on technologies such as cloud engineering, data platforms, digital health applications, automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning.


Medtronics expects the GIT center will boost productivity, manage risks, and drive growth in healthcare technology.

The GIT will be part of the Medtronic Engineering and Innovation Center (MEIC) in Hyderabad where it employs over 1,000 engineers.

"India offers one of the best talent pools for IT. We look forward to leveraging the skills to support the growth of healthcare technology thereby positively impacting patient lives,“ said Rashmi Kumar, senior vice-president (SVP) and chief information officer (CIO), Medtronic.

Medtronic, which gave the world the first battery-powered pacemaker seven decades ago, is betting big on India.

Speaking to ET in March this year, Geoff Martha, its chairman and CEO said beyond leveraging talent in India, Medtronic's next phase of growth in the country will involve evaluating possibilities of redesigning products to make them more affordable for patients, sourcing components locally, and manufacturing in India.

Since 2011, Medtronic has ramped up research and development in India.
